On Friday, Star Wars fans received the first teaser trailer for Star Wars: Episode IX titled The Rise of Skywalker.
Diehard fans were shown the trailer during Star Wars Celebration Day in Chicago.
J.J. Abrams confirmed in a statement that Carrier Fisher, who died in 2016, will still appear in the movie. The footage that will be used of Fisher is previously unseen footage from The Force Awakens.
“We desperately loved Carrie Fisher,” Abrams said, according to People. “Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us. We were never going to recast or use a CG character. With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie, we have found a way to honor Carrie’s legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII.”
Star Wars: Episode IX is set to be released on December 20, 2019.
